Towards Abstraction Sat 1 to Sun 30 May 2021

Everyone loves a good quilt, but this is quilting like you've never seen it before! Toward Abstraction brings together a number of incredible artists whose primary medium is modern quilting.

The exhibition will be opened by contemporary machine embroidery artist (and podcast host) Cathy Jack Coupland on Saturday 1 May at 4 PMAttendance is free but RSVP is essential.

What is modern quilting I hear you ask?

Well, in the same way the modern art movement signalled a move away from realism toward abstraction, modern quilting represents a move away from traditional aesthetics, patterns and fabrics – instead favouring bold, graphic design and a willingness to experiment.  This style has received much international attention, particularly in North America, but are infrequently exhibited in Australia.

The quilters represented here showcase some of the most exciting Australian artists working in the modern quilt movement today.
As a group they have works held in public and private collections, and have taught, exhibited, published and won awards internationally.

We hope to see you at the opening of Toward Abstraction at Gallery76 or at the exhibition at 76 Queen Street, Concord West from Sat 1 to Sun 30 May 2021!
