The Song Tree Project

Artist Michelle Belgiorno invites women (especially Embroiderers' Guild NSW members) to add their stitches to the leaves of an Australian Song Tree.

Note: Song Tree leaves to be completed by 26 July 2019

AIM - is to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity and explore common cultural threads shared by all women in a time of often-divisive public commentary. Together, participants share their songs, memories and lyric themes of childhood songs, lullabies and nursery rhymes through needlework and embroidery techniques of their choice.  Women of all ages are invited to stitch together - both literally and figuratively - a song tree that celebrates the similarities and differences of songs from around the world and cultural diversity.

THE SONG TREE EXHIBITION
In September 2019 Michelle will create and exhibit a large tree-like installation at the Casula Powerhouse in Liverpool comprising the embroidered leaves and songs of participants.

Workshops can be conducted with your stitching group or you can work individually.

Participants can receive cotton fabric cut into a leaf shape ready to stitch with their own design illustrating their song. To maintain aesthetic harmony of the finished work, use similar colours to the following chart of 6 stranded cotton numbers. Thread kits can be supplied on request. Please do not stitch the outside border of the leaf.
