Hon Craig Laundy MP visits the Guild

In March, Hon Craig Laundy MP visited the Guild and, accompanied by Wendy Schmid, Margaret Veenestra and Effie Mitrofanis, toured both the building and Effie's exhibition: Metamorphosis - A Retrospective with Effie Mitrofanis.

Craig (our local member) was instrumental in helping us acquire a grant to assist with the rebuilding of the centre.

"After years of hard work by so many it has been a privilege to be involved in some small way to help these visionaries achieve their dream," he said. "My great hope is that these new premises breathe new life into an ancient art and craft."

ANZAC Hearts in Salisbury UK
To commemorate ANZAC Day this year, the Wiltshire branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity,  are working with children from Sutton Veny Primary School to make hearts based on WW1 sweetheart pincushions, one for each of the 144 Australian WW1 soldiers laid to rest in the church yard next to the school.   Students at the school have been laying flowers on these graves every year since 1918!

This year, the Wiltshire branch has asked for embroidered Hearts from Australia and has contacted the Guild via Wendy Schmid with details of the project. There are two things the organisers would like to achieve:

“….in order that the children remember the day, and that they remember SSAFA. (Many of them are service children and may go on to serve themselves, and it is important that they know to come to us - SSAFA - if ever they need help. Occasions like this help bed SSAFA in their minds, for the future).

1) We would really like some embroidered Hearts from Australia - Helen M. Stevens, an international embroiderer, has facilitated a FB group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/StitchinmyHeart/about/

Contained therein is a template for the Hearts, plus a PO Box address in the UK for them to be sent to. The instructions are just guidelines - you will be able to design your own Australia-themed hearts, I am sure.

We are exhibiting the children's Anzac Hearts in Salisbury throughout June, and it would be incredible if we could have some hearts from Australia to be placed alongside them.

2) Anzac Day is likely too soon for you to provide Hearts - I have no idea how long parcels take from Australia - but if we could have a written letter perhaps from yourself, letting the children know that you, as Australian embroiderers, are really pleased that the children are remembering your soldiers, and that you will be sending over some Hearts to join in with the Salisbury exhibition in June.”
